Ipsy Glam Bag May 2013

Gosh! Another month has flown by in a flash. It’s time to show-n-tell my “Spring Fling” Ipsy Glam Bag for May. This one might just be the best one yet. It has a $50 value for cryin’ out loud! No duds in the bag for me – I’m in beauty product heaven. Watch the video in HD for best quality. I’m “super excited” about a bajillion times.

DIY Dry Shampoo for Dark Hair

Dry shampoo has been a MUST HAVE in my daily hair care routine for the past three years. I’ve gone through countless spray cans of different brands (Psst!, Tresemme, John Frieda, Garnier, Oscar Blandi, Batiste…to name a few), spending way too much for very little product. I started to use plain old baby powder, sprinkling it directly on my roots and rubbing it in, and I found that it worked just as well or even better at giving my hair added volume and combating greasiness. I continued to do this for months until one day I was at work, and I happen to catch a glance of my hair in the mirror. It looked like I had smeared a powdered doughnut all over my head. It was even more noticeable because I had my hair up in a ponytail, a voluminous, bouncy, GRAY colored ponytail. Horrified, I vowed to figure out a way to darken the powder… and that is just what I did. Oh, and your hair will smell a little chocolatey. Yum!

THE RECIPE: Mix 3 parts cocoa powder and 1 part cornstarch and/or baby powder in a small container. I lucked out and found an old Maybelline loose face powder container, which is perfect because it sprinkles just the right amount. Depending on how dark your hair is, you may need to tweak the recipe to make it lighter or darker. To darken the mixture a little bit more, add some cinnamon to the mix. Sorry for the lack of specific measurement, but I don’t measure anything. I just go freehand! Mmmm…my hair smells like cookies.Because this container works so well, I just hold the container in my hand and sprinkle the powder directly onto my roots and rub it in with my fingers. If you don’t have a nifty container like this one, you can just take a fluffy face powder brush and dip it into the dry shampoo and dab on to your roots. Other container ideas: salt/pepper shaker, mineral powder foundation containers (like BareMinerals), powdered sugar container/shaker, empty baby powder container.

QUICK TIP: Did you know that the best way to use dry shampoo is to apply it BEFORE you actually need it? If your hair is already oily before applying it won’t work as well. Apply at your roots and rub it in right after your hair is washed and dried. It will extend the life of your style, give you volume and thickness, and it will prevent your hair from becoming oily.

Ipsy Glam Bag April 2013

My Pretty In Pink Ipsy Glam Bag for April ’13 finally arrived (about 2 weeks late, but whatever). It was worth the wait! This is my favorite Glam Bag so far since I started my subscription in January. If you are not a fan of pink things, well, you probably won’t like these products with the exception of the hair powder. I LOVE me some pink, so I couldn’t be more thrilled. According to Ipsy, this month’s bag has a $30 value. I’m loving ALL of these products – no duds this month! Seriously.

Powder Play Voluminizing & Texturizing Powder by SexyHair: A great boost to my ultra fine/thin hair. Gives my hair a little lift by itself, or enables the tease to last.
Sation Nail Lacquer in Love At First Byte: My FAVORITE polish this Spring. A peachy-pink, high quality, glossy-sheer, yet buildable nail enamel.
Be a Bombshell Blush in Beach Please: Bright fuschia-pink blush that is super pigmented. Normally pink blushes don’t even show up on my skin. This one definitely does – a little goes a long way.
Mica Beauty Cosmetics Mineral Eyeshadow/Shimmer Powder in Earth: The most gorgeous shimmer powder that really shines! Use as eyeshadow or mix with lipgloss or blow onto nail polish. So many options for this versatile product.

Sunday Yoga

“Have only love in your heart for others. The more you see the good in them, the more you will establish good in yourself.” ~ Paramahansa Yogananda
Sometimes you just have to view the world upside-down to fully clear your mind. I typically do my self practice in my living room, but today I decided to take it outside in the fresh, cool spring air. I’ve been feeling a little bogged down lately, just trying to handle the responsibilities of being an adult, combined with all the tragedies that are going on in our world right now. This past week left me drained and overwhelmed. What do I do when I’m overwhelmed? I stop and stand on my head. Works wonders every time.  :)

DIY Heart Print Pattern Dress

Hey girl, whatcha doin’? Hey girl, where you goin’? Who’s that girl? Who’s that girl? It’s me, knockin’ off Zooey Deschanel’s red heart print dress. The adorable New Girl wore an adorable red dress with adorable white hearts during her SNL monologue last year. Well, I also have an adorable little red dress from H&M, but it was missing something….those little white hearts! So I went to the craft store, bought some white fabric paint, and went to town on my little red dress. It was a success, and I’m going to share with you how to do it! You can paint those hearts anywhere- dresses, jeans, shirts, whatever floats your boat!

Garnier Olia Hair Color Review

Hello! This morning I decided it was time to eliminate those pesky little gray hairs of mine and make a change from a subtle ombre to solid color. I’ve been sporting a modified ombre since November, meaning that I lightened my tips to a caramel shade, but only on the underneath panel of my hair. I enjoyed the look, but I’m ready for a little change back to normal. I decided to give Garnier’s new oil-based hair color a try in 4.3 Dark Golden Brown. Continue reading

Did you hear, Sean is going to be on Dancing with the Stars? Oh man, that says Jake Pavelka all over it. Smart move? We shall see.

Lately…On My Plate

1/2 medium cucumber, grape tomatoes, 1/2 cup fat free cottage cheese, 1/2 Haas avocado, black pepper, dill

Hi peeps! I’ve been obsessed with this simple, nutrient-rich salad lately. That, and I may have a little avocado addiction (avocados = nature’s butter). It doesn’t take much preparation, just the ability to use a knife and spoon, which is ideal for me because I have the culinary skills of a 9-year-old. At least I can make it look pretty on the plate. I probably don’t need to tell you about the health benefits of avocados, but in case you were wondering, click here. Bon appetit!
