the heat is on

These are my three heat tools that I use on a regular basis to create long-lasting styles for my hair. I don’t use them everyday or at the same time, but at least two or three days a week, I’ll reach for at least one of these miracle-workers.

1. Hot Tools pink titanium flat iron

I’ve been using this flat iron for the past three years, and it is still going strong! It has adjustable heat settings and glides through hair effortlessly.  I use it to straighten of course, but I also use it to create beautiful curls that last all day and night…and the next day.  I threw out my old curling iron when I mastered the flat iron curl- it’s much quicker and lasts longer!

2. Conair Infiniti pro hair dryer

This 1875 watt blow dryer is the bomb! It is light and powerful with adjustable settings and a cool shot button.  It also comes with two concentrator nozzles to aim the air right where you want it.

3. Vidal Sasson Studio Tools tourmaline & ceramic professional deep waver

I love this hair tool so much that I’ve held onto it for the past five years.  Great for long hair, it produces voluminous, deep waves that will have people asking you, “How did you do that?” Very user friendly, you just mash it down the length of your hair (like a crimping iron) to create long-lasting, natural-looking bodacious waves.

So before you spend too much on high-end brands, do your homework first. These three products were relatively inexpensive, and they “bring-it” every time!

fancy hands

Okay, so I know I’m not twelve, but I love dressing up my fingernails.  In the stuffy professional world, these nails probably won’t fly, but on days off, you can experiment with these little works of nail art.  You’ll need toothpicks or pencil tips, q-tips, fun nail polish colors (don’t be afraid to try yellows or blues), patience, and practice.  Many nail art designs require white and/or black nail polish, so make sure you invest in a quality brand for these colors (e.g. OPI or essie).  Top it off with a clear coat to protect your design from chipping and enjoy your little masterpieces!

nerdy glasses are cool

I’ve noticed something.  Large, dark, thick-framed glasses are everywhere.  People are going beyond Tina Fey and going bigger. Even those who don’t need vision correction are wearing non-prescription black or tortoise frames to keep up with the Justins.

I hopped on the bandwagon this summer when I decided to take a little break from my contact lenses, and I bought a pair of nerdy glasses. At first, I went to the eyeglasses place where I had my eye exam.  I was not about to shell out $200 for a pair of glasses, so I did some researching online.

I stumbled upon a website called Zenni Optical.  It was recommended by Clark Howard, so I knew it was legit.  They have pages and pages full of fashionable glasses for $6.95! I’m talking both the frames and lenses for less than $10. Just make sure you have your prescription handy, and always get the anti-reflective coating so everyone can still see your pretty peepers through your lenses. You can upload your picture to “try-on” the frames before you make your purchase.  I ended up getting three pairs: a black pair, a tortoise pair, and a pink pair, and I love them all!

you glow girl!

Make-up highlighting is great for enhancing your complexion, contouring your face, and producing a natural, healthy-looking glow.  When used correctly, you’ll end up with dewy skin in all the right places, just like a model walking down the runway.  Here are my top six highlighter picks:1. Benefit Cosmetics High Beam – $26
2. Make Up For Ever Star Powder – $19
3. Smashbox Artificial Light Luminizing Lotion – $26
4. Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat Radiant Touch – $40
5. Nars The Multiple in Orgasm – $39
6. Laura Mercier Shimmer Bloc – $38

Sparingly apply highlighter and blend onto your cheek bones, brow bone, around the eye, tear ducts, cupid’s bow (curve of the upper lip), and – if you don’t have oily skin – to the center of the chin, down the bridge of the nose, and the center of the forehead.  This will attract light to the face and produce a beautiful iridescence on the skin.  No highlighter handy? You can try using a light shimmery eyeshadow instead.

Here is the look that I’m talking about:

Jennifer Lopez has graciously volunteered to be your guide to show you exactly where to put your highlighter. Just follow the little dots.

Thank you J Lo!

crazy for colorful stripes

Everyone has gone berserk over Missoni for Target, and you can see why.  This much-anticipated line debuted on Sept. 13 causing to crash several times. Unfortunately, many items have sold out, but if you are desperate for those bright zig-zags, you can find them on ebay.  The bicycle is my absolute favorite, and you’ll find a few of them up for bid.

1. Missoni for Target women’s comfort bike
2. Missoni for Target zig-zag rainboots
3. Missoni for Target jumpsuit
4. Missoni for Target zig-zag arm warmer

fruity fingernails

How cute are these nails? This is a very easy design that you can do yourself.  The green tops can be drawn on the tips of the nails also.  It doesn’t have to be perfect, and you can experiment with different shades of red or pink.

If you don’t like strawberries, you can try doing watermelons, but instead of plain white for the seeds, use black underneath, and paint the green and white rind straight across the top.

You could also alternate fingers, strawberries and watermelons on the same hand.

get on the pole

So I’ve been taking pole fitness classes for a while now, and let me just get the message out there: Pole fitness is no joke, people! Now I’m not talking about learning how to be a stripper. This is an athletic performing art that requires INSANE muscular strength and flexibility. I love it so much, and I am tired of being hesitant to tell people what I’ve been doing due to the widespread ignorance on this form of exercise. It is fun, flirty, and captivating to watch (see Jenyne Butterfly walk on air [2:20] in the video below), and yes, I am obsessed.

Wasn’t that amazing? And not at all trashy, right?

zumba fitness® rocks my workout

Put on your Zumba pants people, and let’s get sweaty.  Zumba Fitness® is a latin-inspired “fitness party” that combines pulse pounding music, dance moves, and colorful workout wear to give you the ultimate calorie-burning experience. One hour of it turns me into a sweaty mess! Not only does it put the treadmill to shame, it makes you feel sexy and will increase your self-confidence. The hot moves are uncomplicated and will have you hip-shaking and body rolling in no time. Pitbull and Wyclef Jean love it, and you will too (see why in the video below)! I’ve been a Zumba Fitness® instructor since 2007, and it has changed my life. Let it change yours.
Warning: Zumba is highly addictive.

review: coastal scents metal mania palette

Eighty-eight metallic eyeshadows in one packed palette for $25.  Yes please.  Coastal Scents’ Metal Mania Palette delivers highly-pigmented, high-quality colors for you to play with.  When I opened the palette for the first time, my eyes lit up, and I thought it was the most beautiful thing I had seen in a long time.  Even my man thinks it’s mesmerizing.

I really have nothing bad to say about it.  Yes, there is a tiny bit of fall out, but even high- end eyeshadows will give you that.  Eye looks from edgy to natural, smokey to bright- the possibilities are endless.  I have a bunch of lonely Urban Decay eyeshadow pots that I no longer reach for, now that I have this baby.  Prime your lids with Smashbox Photo Finish Lid Primer, and these shadows stay all day – no creasing.  Oh, and if you don’t like metallic, Coastal Scents has other non-metallic-y color palettes to choose from.  Available at

holy grail make-up

These are my no-fail, goof-proof products that I have been using for the past year.  I try new products every now and then, but I always have these items in my make-up bag.

1. Loreal magic smooth souffle foundation in classic tan

This drugstore foundation is amazing! Some people use a brush to blend, but I just use my fingertips (wash your hands first!).  It feels smooth like a primer going on and has a matte finish.  No need to follow-up with a face powder.  It stays put, even after getting sweaty at the gym.

2. Bare Minerals warmth all-over face color

I’ve been using this as a bronzer for six years, and I still cannot find anything better.  It gives a natural color without being sparkly or shiny, and it works for most skin tones. Available at Ulta or Sephora.

3. EcoTools retractable kabuki brush

This super soft brush is so good to my skin! I usually use it to apply my bronzer, or it makes a great brush for face powder.  I love how it retracts and has its own cover, which makes it ideal for travel.  Get it at any drugstore.

4. NYC browser brush-on brow kit

This and mascara are a daily must.  My eyebrows are pretty sad with sparse hairs that you can barely see.  This drugstore brow kit fills them in and will stay put – even after surfing for several hours! It comes a brow brush, brow powder, and wax.

5. Smashbox photo finish lid primer

I won’t bother with eye shadow unless I wear this lid primer.  It will make your shadows pop, and it keeps them from creasing or migrating to other parts of your face.  I’ve tried drugstore versions of this product, but nothing comes close.  Available at Ulta or Sephora.

6. Maybelline eyestudio gel liner

Hands down- best liner out there.  I used to use Make Up Forever Aqua Eyes gel pencil, but this one actually stays on and will not run until you take it off.  I use an angled eye brush to apply.

7. Covergirl lash blast volume waterproof mascara

I was not blessed with long or thick eyelashes, but this mascara allows my lashes to be seen.  Stays put and holds a curl all-the-live-long-day.  Drew Barrymore and I prefer this mascara over any Diorshow mascara any day.

8. Burt’s Bees tinted lip balm in tiger lily

Smooth, peachy, and moisturizing. Hint of color and shine makes lips happy.
